Fort Collins, Colorado - Utah 27 CSU 3
Are the Utes the best team in the Mountain West Conference, right now? The way that this team has been playing the last couple of weeks this is a legit question. With the win over Colorado State the Utes move to 6 - 3 on the season, 3 - 2 in conference play. They are on a 5 game win streak and are playing better football than BYU, Wyoming, New Mexico, and the Air Force Academy.
After the game, I asked Stevenson Sylvester how good this team was, he responded "We're dangerous, real dangerous."
Why are the Utes dangerous? I just mentioned that they may be playing the best football of any conference team, and they are doing so while people have already written them out of the conference race. They are somewhat under the radar, The Utes have as many conference wins as any other team in the conference outside of Air Force.
Although the Utes do not control their own destiny in the conference race, players and coaches now realize that the championship is no longer as much of a forgoten goal as it once was.
Enter the bye week, where the Utes will take the week in getting healthy. And everybody that I talked to after the game was confident that this team could continue the momentum into the final three games of the season.
Game Notes;
The Utes rushed for 322 yards, as both Darrell Mack (151) and Ray Stowers (123) eclipsed the century mark. Stowers gives the Utes a nice change of pace as he allows Mack to the oppurtunity to rest and is more of a shifty back than Mack.
Brian Johnson had another lack luster day, stats wise (14-21 130 yds, 2 TD), but did a fantastic job managing the offense and moving the ball.
Seven sacks by the Utes, while the offense game up none. The Ues also had 13 tackles for losses.
