MIAMI DOLPHINS QUARTERBACK JOHN BECK
Wednesday, November 28, 2007
(On the progress he has made) – "I would say definitely from my first start to my second start I felt even more comfortable. Certain plays I was definitely feeling like I was able to move around and stay with all of my reads like I'm supposed to. As a quarterback, you want to move quick and think quick but not move too quick and think too quick, if that makes sense. I felt like I was able to do the things that we worked on in practice, but still knowing there are things to improve. There were plays that had we made, it would have definitely helped."
(On if the coaching staff has confidence in having Beck run its entire offense) – "I would hope so. That's why we work so hard in practice. When we step on the practice field, we try to do everything we can so that they do have that confidence, and when we go on the field we can call whatever we need to try to maximize our opportunity to score points."
(On playing in difficult conditions at Heinz Field) – "That's just part of football, having to deal with those types of conditions. As a quarterback, you look at that as a challenge. This is what's put in front of me, now I've got to go out there and compete and play the way I'm supposed to play regardless of the situation of the field conditions."
(On the difference between practice and games) – "There is a difference because as the first-team offense, when you're in practice, you're running against the prep squad defense. Some of those guys are guys that are really offensive players but being used on the prep defense. But I think if you treat practice the right way as a quarterback, if you treat it going full speed and if your thought process through plays is really what it's supposed to be and treating it game speed-like, then as you go to the game, you just play like you practice."
(On if the game against the Jets represents the team's best chance to win) – "For us, we go into everything game wanting to win and expecting to win. If you talked to the people in this locker room before Monday night, we thought we were going to go in and win that football game. Heading into this week nothing changes – we still feel the same way. One thing we know is that we feel we're a better football team than our record shows, and I'm sure the Jets probably feel the same way. I'm sure they're probably in their locker room right now saying, 'We're a lot better than our record shows and we have to treat it that way.'"
(On his comfort level when the team uses different running backs) – "I actually said that I felt comfortable with them when they came in. When Patrick Cobbs came in, I said that I felt comfortable with him because I do stuff with him in practice."
(On his assessment of the team's running back position) – "With guys having to step in like that at the drop of a hat, I think they did a great job. When you're not getting a lot of reps in practice and then because of injuries you're asked to jump into a football game and still know what you're supposed to do and do it to the best of your ability, I felt like they did the best that they could. They went out there with the time and the preparation that they had, and I felt like they did a pretty good job."
(On playing in front of the home fans at Dolphin Stadium) – "It'll be good to get back to home just because these last two games have been away. It always is good to play here in front of our fans in our stadium. There is a sense of pride when you're playing in your own place because it is your place, and it is your field. You want to go out there and perform your best. You want to make a statement when you're there"
(On the offense's inability to score points despite moving the ball effectively) – "It's tough. When we step on the football field, you're not thinking that we might not score a touchdown. You're thinking, 'We're going to go down and score right now, this time.' That's our talk as an offense before we go out on the field. 'Let's put this one in the end zone.' It has been a little frustrating, but it's not a big thing as far as what needs to change. It's something that is a small thing that makes a big difference, if that makes any sense. The thing is, when we go and practice, little things here and there can make a big difference in getting us close to the end zone and getting us in the end zone. The things that we need to work on are those small things that are going to get us into the end zone."
(On an example of a small thing the offense must improve) – "Third-down conversions and staying on the football field when you're on the fringe. This last Monday night game, we needed to get real close to kick a field goal because of the field conditions. We kept getting on the fringe of that, and we needed another third-down conversion to keep us going. You've got to move the chains, so I would say one small thing that makes a big difference is moving the chains, staying on the football field and converting on third down. When you do that, you're giving yourself a better opportunity to continue moving the football and getting into the end zone."
