Reason for Concern -- Split the Series in Half
1320, K-Fan Exclusive - Live with the Utah Jazz
The Jazz and Rockets have played 20 quarters of basketball.   If you split the first 10 and the second 10 you can see how this series has swung.

First 10 quarters Jazz Offensive Efficiency = 110.8
Second 10 quarter Jazz Offensive Efficiency = 93.7

I think it would be fair to say the Jazz have an offensive problem right now.  The Rockets defense is ranked #2 in the NBA and they are winning the battle of the Jazz strength v. the Rockets strength.

Defensively the Jazz are slightly off but it is probably in part due to the offensive slide.

First 10 quarters Jazz Defensive Efficiency = 98.9
Second 10 quarters Jazz Defensive Efficiency = 102.8

Re: Reason for Concern -- Split the Series in Half
Coaching? I don't think so. I'm sick of many listeners complaining about Jerry Sloan, his lack of flexibility and coaching style. First off, that guy who was ripping Sloan for not making adjustments: 1 - Kyle Korver vs. Ronnie Brewer. It's funny how these guys overlook the fact that Ronnie played 33 minutes before being replaced by CJ Miles with 3 mins left. If its close, that's a 36 minute game. Korver played a very poor 10 minutes. One caller argued that the Jazz should run some plays for Korver early in the game, well he doesn't even step on the floor until the second and fourth quarters in the usual rotation. Last night, he entered the game and got beat baseline twice and gave up that terrible turnover with minimal effort. Now I know Korver is loved by many in Utah, but he got his A handed to him last night and Sloan made the right adjustment. I believe Korver didn't have the necessary focus to be effective last night. He'll be in the gym today and tomorrow and he'll be ready for friday. 2. Adjustment in plays - Those who knew what they were watching saw significantly different play calls than previous games. However, the players failed to execute. How can the fans blame Sloan when he calls a timeout, and straight out of the timeout, his players through away the inbounds pass? Bottom line, the players failed to match the Rockets enthusiasm in the hostile environment. It's tough to execute anytime against the Rockets defense, especially when their energy level is significantly higher than your teams. You're dead on with the fact that the Jazz have a chance to close out the series on their home floor. They are poised and exactly where they need to be. They're a very young team, and it's easy to forget how young they really are. Young teams will win some games they shouldn't win, and lose some games they shouldn't lose. I LOVE the fact that DWILL isn't anywhere to be found. Having watched him for the past 5 years or so, he can be downright ruthless when he feels angry or disrespected. I have no doubt he is focusing on friday's game right now, and he could even be in the gym trying to get himself out of this shooting slump and working on his free throws. -Brian On a different note, I wonder why Boozer isn't attacking the rim like he has all season. He's played against long defenders like Mutumbo, and he beats them with his quickness to the opposite side of the rim. He's very much like Malone was in that respect. He's a beast on the low block. However, he needs to learn how to better handle traffic and double teams on the low block. From my perspective, the double teams aren't coming until the first dribble. There's two ways you can handle the double team as a player, turn and face, but then you're forced into a jump shot, which Boozer hasn't been hitting this series. The other way to adjust to a double team is to pass back out, and post up again on the low block. Malone was phenomenal at this. The second time the ball enters, the double will either be later, or passing lanes will open up. The movement after the first pass goes in freezes the defense, and prevents them from flying around. Hopefully Boozer will make these adjustments. I believe the assistant coaches (best staff in the league) will address this the next couple of days. Let me know your thoughts. Go Jazz! -Brian Smith

Re: Reason for Concern -- Split the Series in Half
The biggest reason that I see why the Jazz have struggled recently is that Boozer isn't scoring the way he usually does in these last few games. He's getting scores off of garbage stuff like offensive rebounds and broken plays. I know the playoffs are all about taking away your first option, but maybe we should try to get him going more in the first half and not settle for what is being given.
