DJ and PK Mornings 6-10am

DJ and PK had BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe and Utah Athletic Director Chris Hill in studio to talk about the up coming football season and the state of athletics at their respective schools.

Tom Holmoe

Tom Holmoe talked about how BCS money helps infuse the big conferences with cash every year and how the small conferences are competing because of the 85 scholarship limit. He also talked about fan reactions to signing smaller schools to pump up your record to look better if your team is in position for the BCS.

DJ asked about scheduling and where BYU is with their plans. Holmoe says that some AD’s are planning for 2015 and he said looking that far ahead is difficult because teams tend to change their minds. PK brought up that Bronco has said he likes to play regionally because of the recruiting base. Holmoe said that is a focus because of recruiting and over all expense for the program. Holmoe mentioned that  Nebraska and Auburn are possibilities for future gridiron match-ups . Holmoe said that with Direct TV coming on board with the MTN. It has made negotiating with bigger conferences easier because the games can be seen by more people.

DJ and PK asked about the new bowl association with the Humanitarian Bowl, conference expansion or BYU to the PAC-10.

Chris Hill

Has been at the U for 21 years and said that he is amazed how the job has changed and grown. He wants to expand the building on campus and search for more budget to work with. Energy costs have caused Hill to find areas to cut because schedules are set so creativity is a must. Hill said that having Direct TV on board has made recruiting easier because coaches can honestly tell parents that they can see their kids on TV.

PK asked about Chris Hill being in the MWC and still looking to build for the future to make themselves attractive for the bigger conferences if they want to expand. Hill said that they are focused on being a good citizen in the MWC and make the athletic program a good as it possibly can be so they are in position for whatever comes along. Hill said that football and basketball are looking to play schools from bigger conferences but said that home and home deals will be more likely with PAC-10 teams because of the proximity.

DJ asked about what he tells fans about rebuilding a basketball program. Hill says Jim Boylen’s basketball team has improved on defense and will look to build upon that as they try to compete near the top of the league. Chris Hill answered text messages from listeners for the last segment. One question was about how individual tickets to the BYU game are not being sold. If you want a ticket buy season tickets. Hill says the decision was made because a school has to take care of their season ticket holders. Dr. Hill thinks that a MWC team could win a national football title if a playoff system is used. The current system makes it too hard to win. A text was read about Dr. Hill hiring a Cougar to coach the football team. Hill said that Kyle Whittingham has unquestioned loyalty to the commitments he has made.
