Should BYU be worried about their first week match up with Northern Iowa? Take a listen to who thinks this may be an upset special. What's the first impression of Brevin Knight and just how much will he fit into the system of the Utah Jazz? What's missing from the olympic games that we used to love? All of these questions are answered and more on the Best of Powerhouse!!!
The LA Times listed its "Watch Out Games" for the upcoming college football season. Click here to see the game they think could be an upset special for BYU.
A BCS Bid blown in week one?
Brevin Knight joined Scott Garrard on 1320 KFAN this afternoon and discussed the following issues:
Where he thinks the Utah Jazz should be next year.
What attractive features remain for this team.
Is he worried about a new system?
What role he is expected to have.
The "swagger" he wants to bring to the Utah Jazz
and at this point in his career, why money is no longer a worry and how winning will be the only thing that matters.
DJ and PK talked about the baseball trading deadline and the fact that Manny Ramirez is unhappy in a town where the fans love him and the team is paying him the last of his multi-year $ 106 million salary. They took that premise and discussed stories of athletes that really seemed to enjoy playing their game. PK says that any athlete that does the bare minimum in fan interaction and media requests would own any town they play in.
Here is the Tysman Rap that was played on the show today. It isn't the whole song but it is enough to relive 1990.
Ben Bagley fills in for Alema Harrington and wants to know what you will be watching on the tube: MLB, X-Games or World Series of Poker? Dave Fox tells you why the Rockets are improved, but still nothing to worry about and why the non-conference BCS schedule benefits BYU and Utah. It's all right here on theBest of Powerhouse!!!
DJ and PK had BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe and Utah Athletic Director Chris Hill in studio to talk about the up coming football season and the state of athletics at their respective schools.
Tom Holmoe
Tom Holmoe talked about how BCS money helps infuse the big conferences with cash every year and how the small conferences are competing because of the 85 scholarship limit. He also talked about fan reactions to signing smaller schools to pump up your record to look better if your team is in position for the BCS.
DJ asked about scheduling and where BYU is with their plans. Holmoe says that some AD’s are planning for 2015 and he said looking that far ahead is difficult because teams tend to change their minds. PK brought up that Bronco has said he likes to play regionally because of the recruiting base. Holmoe said that is a focus because of recruiting and over all expense for the program. Holmoe mentioned that Nebraska and Auburn are possibilities for future gridiron match-ups . Holmoe said that with Direct TV coming on board with the MTN. It has made negotiating with bigger conferences easier because the games can be seen by more people.
DJ and PK asked about the new bowl association with the Humanitarian Bowl, conference expansion or BYU to the PAC-10.
Chris Hill
Has been at the U for 21 years and said that he is amazed how the job has changed and grown. He wants to expand the building on campus and search for more budget to work with. Energy costs have caused Hill to find areas to cut because schedules are set so creativity is a must. Hill said that having Direct TV on board has made recruiting easier because coaches can honestly tell parents that they can see their kids on TV.
PK asked about Chris Hill being in the MWC and still looking to build for the future to make themselves attractive for the bigger conferences if they want to expand. Hill said that they are focused on being a good citizen in the MWC and make the athletic program a good as it possibly can be so they are in position for whatever comes along. Hill said that football and basketball are looking to play schools from bigger conferences but said that home and home deals will be more likely with PAC-10 teams because of the proximity.
DJ asked about what he tells fans about rebuilding a basketball program. Hill says Jim Boylen’s basketball team has improved on defense and will look to build upon that as they try to compete near the top of the league. Chris Hill answered text messages from listeners for the last segment. One question was about how individual tickets to the BYU game are not being sold. If you want a ticket buy season tickets. Hill says the decision was made because a school has to take care of their season ticket holders. Dr. Hill thinks that a MWC team could win a national football title if a playoff system is used. The current system makes it too hard to win. A text was read about Dr. Hill hiring a Cougar to coach the football team. Hill said that Kyle Whittingham has unquestioned loyalty to the commitments he has made.
How is it possible that RSL head coach Jason Kreis can demand respect? What's the stupidest thing you would stand outside hours for? and wait til you hear the latest testing that will be used in the olympic games. It's all right here on the Best of Powerhouse!!!
(On the earliest he would name a starting QB if there was a clear-cut leader in the competition and if he would wait until the end of the final preseason game to make a decision) -- “To answer your first question, if it was clear cut, I would want to get it done as soon as possible. I really would. I think that (the starting quarterback) player needs to be behind the offensive line. He needs to start to find chemistry with whoever the receivers will be at that time. If he was head and shoulders above everybody else, I think it would be pretty clear to us that we would start to move in that direction. That being said, as far as going into the end of this thing and going all the way to the end of the preseason, I wouldn’t want it to be that long either.”
(On if QB Josh McCown is ahead of Chad Henne or John Beck) -- “I don’t think anybody is ahead of anybody right now. The only thing that certainly, and this isn’t a secret, Josh has been in several systems so it’s a little bit easier for him to hear some of the installs. And he knows how to handle an install. He’s been out there in a couple different places, so this isn’t new to him. Where it’s the first time around for maybe Chad, where you’re throwing a bunch of different stuff at them each night. Right now in between practices, they’re getting a bunch. That would be about it, but I don’t see anybody ahead of anybody right now when I watch what I’m seeing out there.”
(On if his QB philosophy is similar to the one of Bill Parcells about not turning the ball over) -- “I do, and probably the other 30 or so head coaches in the league do to. So whoever’s philosophy, one way or the other, turning the ball over gets you beat in this league, clearly gets you beat. It’s the fastest way to lose. I think you got to look long and hard and maybe look back; I’m going to say maybe it was the Rams a while ago, when they went to the Super Bowl, where they turned it over 40 something times and still won the Super Bowl. We can’t turn the ball over, we know that. We talk about it all the time. Our margin for error that way we want to eliminate the margin for error as much as we possibly can. Turnovers, not something that can happen at that position. I think also you don’t have to try to win the game at that position. You really don’t have to try and be the guy and win the game. There are 10 other guys out there with you and there’s going to be some skill people out there that you’re going to be able to get the ball to. We think we have a couple of good backs that we can hand the ball to so be a piece of this.”
Here is what Miami Dolphins Head Coach Tony Sparano said to the Media on Monday.
(On his conversation he had with John Beck after yesterday’s practice ) -- “To be honest with you, to put (yesterday’s practice) behind him and to get going. Quarterbacks have days like that. If you’re going to be a quarterback in the National Football League, it’s going to happen. You would have to show me one that it doesn’t happen to. That being said, everyday out here is a new day and what we really want to see, and this is what we talked about here yesterday. You get him out there for a little bit longer period and you see him play nine, 10 plays instead of three or four plays and you want to see how they respond. I thought that John came out here today and he bounced back and had a little bit more of a solid practice this morning.”
(On what he thinks QB John Beck could have improved on) -- “I just think at that position it comes down to decision making. Sometimes a good decision means you have to throw the ball away. If there’s pressure or some of those things, sometimes a great decision, one of the best decisions, is to get rid of the ball, in some of those situations. It’s easier for us to sit here and say that, but when you’re back there and you’re in the tunnel and you have to make those decisions that fast. As you get on in this, those decisions, the game starts to slow down. What we need to remember about John, is that John really is just a one-year player. He didn’t have a lot of game snaps last year, so what he’s getting out here is really valuable for him. I like the way he’s coming along and I think he’s going to be fine. He’ll get better and better. He’s a pretty contentious guy that way.”
Why can Utah only get a road game when playing big time programs? Are the olympics overrated? Are they past their prime? These questions and more were answered today during the Best of Powerhouse.
