HIghlights from Tuesday's practice:
- The juicy news came after practice ended, when defensive coordinator Jaime Hill snapped at redshirt freshman defensive back Jordan Pendleton for doing an interview with the Tribune's Jay Drew. With David Tafuna not practicing due to a head injury, Pendleton saw time with the first-team defense. Drew sought him out after practice - following BYU's standard procedure - and began the interview when Hill yelled out Pendleton to get in the locker room. Hill, who also serves as the secondary coach, told the former Bingham High star that he needed to earn his keep on the field before being interviewed. According to Drew, Pendleton then called Hill a prick and went into the locker room.
- Hill was out of line, embarrasing Pendleton in front of a reporter and several others - including myself - who witnessed the incident. If Hill - who usually is a lousy interview - doesn't want freshmen or any other player interviewed, he needs to alert BYU's sports information people so they can inform the media. Coach Bronco Mendenhall has a full-access policy for interviews after practice, and Hill shouldn't take it upon himself to change it without letting others know. Mendenhall doesn't run his program on spur-of-the-moment emotion; neither should an assistant coach. If Hill told his players not to do interviews, he was right to jump Pendleton. If that's the case, then tip-off BYU media relations.
- Center Tom Sorensen was in uniform at the of practice but did not participate. Mendenhall said Sorensen may have surgery on his shoulder next week.
- Quarterbacks coach Brandon Doman told me that Max Hall is looking outstanding. Hall threw touchown passes to Spencer Hofaka and Michael Reed. He also connect with tight end Andrew George on a two-point conversion (or a touchdown from the same distance). Doman said the competition between Brendan Gaskins and Kurt McEuen for Hall's back-up probably won't be decided until next week.
- Harvey Unga took turns returning punts during special teams practice. With Austin Collie still out injury, Unga was joined by O'Neill Chambers and Reed White.
- Receiver Luke Ashworth held an ice bag to his face after getting hit near the eye.
- Running backs Wayne Latu and J.J. Di Luigi each an impressive runs during scrimmage portions of practice.
- LaVell Edwards attended practice today.

It seems to me like coaches are getting pretty self-absorbed and are pumping themselves up pretty bad. I'm predicting a hard fall to the ground. A lot of coaches that enjoy early success start to get real cocky, then they crash and burn when reality sets it...football will go on with or without a coach. Nobody is irreplaceable.
"PK sounds like the typical media pansy in that lame rant. "Hill is usually a lousy interview"...freaking cry baby."
"Isn't PK the guy (?) who wears trousers up around his bellybutton and carries his stuff around in a bag/man-purse?
Seriously, pansy reporters are a scourge to society."
Get a life PK!
Sincerely, CB
Jay Drew was the reporter. He chose not to report it at the time. Then PK heard it. First, he asked himself if he had any scruples. Nope. Then, he asked himself if he needed hits on his blog. Yep.
Reporters report STORIES. Non-stories and potentially damaging comments not intended for public consumption are the work of GOSSIP COLUMNISTS.
Nice work, PK. The National Enquirer is on line 2 with a lead on what Paris Hilton is up to this week.
All I know is that I really do not care because the games have not started yet. What happens in camp happens in camp. Part of the deal for coaches to really ride their players to get the best out of them. Even if it means that they get embarrassed occasionally. Better to get embarrassed on the practice field in August than on the football field in September.
PK is pathetic. He can dish it out but he can't take it.
LD Templar? C'mon man, I'm LDS, but really. (side note, bs are my initials, not a statement that will shut down a practice at BYU).
Truth is things that it wasn't a big deal and you know it because you backed off of it later in the day. A big argument with Alema when you broke it, then calm and collected when yout told Ben Bagley that it wasn't a big deal and that Bronco shouldn't react to it.
WHERE IS THE TRUTH IN REPORTING?????
