Salt Lake City - "We played, Okay!"
That's how Head Coach Kyle Whittingham descriped his teams 37 - 21 win over Weber State Saturday at Rice Eccles Stadium.
Okay, average, we know we can play better. Not words you would expect after a win, but that was the feeling throughout the Ute team.
But who could blame them?
Yes, they can and have played better. Yes the second team defense gave up 14 points in the fourth quarter to make the score look a lot closer than it really was. But it was a win, and the Utes move to 5 - 0.
So can you really be too disappointed?
Of course they over looked Weber State. But they watched their next opponent (Oregon State) beat the number 1 ranked team in college football on Thursday. So, naturally, they began to look forward to this Thursday when they will get there shot at the Beavers at Rice Eccles. A shot at a PAC-10, BCS team that prior to Thursday night wasn't expected to be much more than a speed bump. Now it's a possible "quality" win.
When Oregon State beat USC, Weber State became almost an inconvenience.
So while coaches, players, media and fans can look at tonight and not be wowed by what they saw, did you really expect anything different?
RANDOM THOUGHTS -
- Kruger, Kruger, Anyone. Kruger? A great game by Weber State left tackle Paul Carpenter. He made Paul Kruger invisible. Kruger came up with 2 tackles, and no sacks. His worst performance thus far this season.
- Running Wild. While the Utes held Weber State to only 56 rushing yards, they will have a much bigger test next week facing a Oregon State offensive line that dominated USC.
- Give Me Consistency! Once again the Utes had a "flat" quarter or quarters. Greg Newman said after the game that they came out flat in the first quarter. And, that they would not be able to do so against Oregon State and win.
- Disappointing. That is how Kyle Whittingham describes the play of his second team defense. They gave up the final two scores of the game on Weber State drives. Coach Whittingham said that he put them out there to get experience and protect the lead.
I am very afraid now. The UTES stunk it up against Weber and let them back in the game. For crap sakes HAWAII beat Weber by more points!!! Utah should not have let Weber score at all! An 80 touchdown drive in the 1st quarter?? THEN 2 80+ yard drives against our 2nd team defense in the 4th. I hope Oregon State doesn't come in and thrash us. Our defense must play perfect against Oregon State, or we won't win. If we give up 360 yards up in the air, like we gave up against Weber then we will lose. Utah was a joke in this game! UTAH also had to settle for 3 field goals, Whittingham get some balls and go for it, YOU WERE PLAYING WEBER STATE!!!! I don't think this win will move Utah up in the polls, very, very crappy game for the UTES, if we are as good as people think, then we should have scored 60!
And byu fans need to wake up from their dream world where houses are made of seven layer jell-o, rivers flow with kool-aid sprite, everyone enjoys watching "Little House on the Prairie" on Friday nights, and they're going to play in the BCS championship game - they will NOT play for a national title no matter what happens to the other BCS teams. Besides, why are we even talking about it when they barely beat one bad team on the road? Be thankful you're ranked so high cougar fans because you haven't beat anyone (anyone meaning a good team) on the road yet, while everyone behind you has gone on the road and beat good teams (except Ohio State).
