Locke - BYU v. Utah Ultimate Stat Pack - Version #2 (Final Edition)
Utah v. BYU the Holy War tune to 1320, K-Fan

THE BYU-UTAH ULTIMATE STAT PACK

NEW STAT PACK INCLUDING DEFENSE -- FINAL VERSION.   You can browse it to find your own conclusions and findings.  Each day I will release more information on www.thefansports.com.

Reminders:   These are unofficial.  It doesn’t include any plays after a game was a blow-out.   The Utah v. Weber State game is not included because it was not televised.

Success is defined as:  40% of the yards on 1st down; 60% of remaining yards on 2nd down; 100% on 3rd or 4th down.

UTAH BY FORMATION

  • Utah’s most effective formation is the 5 wide receiver set.  They have a 60% success rate out of the 5 wide receiver formation.
  • The Utes run the 5 wide receiver set just 11% of their possessions, in contrast to 42% out of a 4 wide set or 26% on a 3 wide set and 15% in a 2 wide set.
  • When the Utes are in 3 wide receiver they run (64% of the time) and in a 4 WR set they pass (62% of the time)
  • The Utes least effective formation is 2 RB; 3 WR where they have just 37% success.
  • The utes best running formation is 1 RB; 3 WR; 1 TE and their least effective is 2 RB 3 WR.
  • The Utes best passing formation is 5 wide set (59% success) and their least effective is 2 RB; 3 WR (29%).
  • The Asiata package has been run 59 times and had success on 71% of the plays.
  • The Louks package has been run 27 times and had success on 52% of the plays

BYU BY FORMATION

  • BYU is amazingly consistent.  Their success rate on 4 WR set is  (56%); on a 3 WR set (56%); on a 2 WR set (58%) and a 1 WR set (59.7%)
  • 37.5% of BYU’s plays come out of 2 RB; 3 WR shotgun set
  • When BYU is in a 3 WR set they pass (67%) and when they are in a 2 WR set they run (65%)
  • When BYU is in a shotgun with 2RB and a TE they run, 14 of 16 times
  • BYU has only gone empty backfield on 5 plays all season.

ADDED 11/19 AT 12:00 PM

UTAH DEFENSE BY FORMATION v. BYU
  • Utah allows just 36% success rate (39% on runs and 36% on passes)
  • Utah’s defense has been best against the 4 WR set (32%) and the 2 RB 3 WR set (26%) which is the set that 38% of BYU’s plays come out of, the most of any formation.
  • Spreading the field and running the ball has not worked against Utah . Utah has held opponents to  29% success rate on run plays out of the 4 WR set, 31% success rate on 3 WR sets.
  • The most successful thing against is power running with a combination of RB and TE adding up to at least 3.  Which is something BYU did nearly 40% of the time this season.

BYU DEFENSE BY FORMATION v. UTAH
  • BYU allows 45% success rate overall. 48% against the run and 42% against the pass
  • BYU defense has been the best against the pass in a 3WR set a success rate of (41%) Utah only uses that formation 26% of their plays and only throws 33% of the time it is in that formation.
  • For all the talk BYU has been ok against the 5 wide sets. The Cougs allowed success on 41% of passes out of the 5 wide set.
  • However, BYU has had a very hard time out of the straight run in a 5 WR set. Allowing the opponent to have success on 14 of 23 plays. Utah has run that 9 times this year. 5 with Asiata and all were successful and 4 with Louks none of them were successful.

Re: Locke - BYU v. Utah Ultimate Stat Pack - Version #2 (Final Edition)
Said it all along that BYU seems predictable with their formations. Interesting to see the stats back it up. TCU seemed to have zeroed in on the BYU trends and knew what was coming. Let's hope Anae can mix it up to keep the Utes guessing, or else it will be a long day for BYU and Whittingham and Anderson can scheme with the best of them. And have the players to pull it off. I hope Anae has some new looks and variety waiting for the Utes.
