Ute Camp Update....Day 4

The Utes held a combined practice this morning with the competition levels high. As they get ready to go full pads tomorrow, some exchanges took place today as the energy levels increased wearing shoulder pads.

At one point, Zane Beadles and Stevenson Sylvester began a dust up that ended up looking like a MLB bench clearing incedent with a lot of people on the field pulling on jerseys of others. After practice, Kyle Whittingham said that it shows the competitive spirit he believes his team has.

Still no Aiona Key who is still waiting for 1 JC grade to be posted.

Back up Linebacker Mo Neal is begining to turn heads of coaches and teammates. (Hear Coach Whittingham, and DC Gary Anderson's breakdowns of Neal below.)

The Quarterbacks spent a good amount of time running option pitch drills in prepatration of running a more open spread option this year.

Both the offense and defense came up with big plays during 11 on 11 drills. Darrell Mack rattled off a 45 yard TD run after a nice cut in the middle of the line of scrimmage, and Jereme Brooks scored off a long scamper out running Brice McCain after catching a short slant over the middle. McCain did get his though as he stripped the ball from a receiver as both were falling to the ground for a interception.

The Utes have suscribed to the Chocolate Milk Theory that it aids in recovery as 4 coolers of milk boxes were available to players (and some coaches) after practice.

College Football Action Live on Locked on Sports Today!!!

David Locke will simulate the Utes and Cougars 2008 Football Season live on his show with kickoffs at 3:10 pm. Tune in as Locke will include scoring summaries, box stores and story lines.

HERE IS THE SCHEDULE OF THE GAMES

The Utes won their opener with Michigan 41 - 30 led by a defense that forced 13 turnovers and score 2 TD's of their own.

BYU breezed by Northern Iowa today 68-7. The running game will need to improve for the Cougs to bust the BCS. 35 carries for 71 yards will not get it done.

BYU looked very impressive thumping Washington 42 - 10. Max Hall passed for 502 yards as the passing offense moved with ease. The running game may still be a concern.

Utah was shaken by the news that backup QB #19 for Utah was suspended 3 games for inappropriate benefits received at a local department store. The game did not go much better. Utah dropped the decision to UNLV 37 - 13. Brian Johnson was pulled at the end of the game for freshman DeVonte Christopher. We have a simulated QB controversy.

BYU came out strong early and owned the game from the opening minutes. An easy 47 - 35 victory was the result. Max Hall continues to throw the ball for big numbers (440 yds) but the running game was non existent for the third consecutive week.

The Beehive Boot belongs to... Utah. 79-7 was the final, everything worked for Utah, nothing worked for the Aggies.

The "Quest for Perfection" gets Cowboy Upped. Wyoming beat BYU in LES 35 -21. Max Hall struggled and was benched for Gaskens in the 3rd qtr.

Utah survives a first half scare but eased to a 41-27 win over Air Force. Robert Johnson had a game changing interception return for a TD and the Utes rolled form there.

Thursday's double header begins at 1:30 with Utah and Weber St followed by BYU and Utah State as soon as game 1 ends.

The Utes held media day today, and the whole team was dressed up in the new Under Armour uni's with red on red. Begining tomorrow the Utes dawn full pads.

2008-2009 Utah Jazz Schedule Released

SALT LAKE CITY (August 6, 2008) – The Utah Jazz announced today the team’s preseason and regular season schedule for the 2008-09 season. The Jazz open the regular season against Northwest Division rival Denver at home on Wednesday, October 29. Utah’s first road game is five days later on November 3 when the team faces the L.A. Clippers at Staples Center.

The Jazz will play all Eastern Conference teams twice each and Western Conference teams four times each, with the exception of four Western Conference teams they will face just three times. The four teams include: L.A. Clippers and New Orleans (two home, one road), and L.A. Lakers and San Antonio (one home, two road).

The Jazz schedule features 20 back-to-back sets, one of which comes at home when the team faces Sacramento on November 28 and New Jersey on November 29.

Utah is scheduled to appear on national television 11 times during the 2008-09 campaign, including six TNT broadcasts (12/11 vs. Portland, 2/5 vs. Dallas, 2/19 vs. Boston, 3/24 vs. Houston, 4/2 at Denver and 4/14 at L.A. Lakers) and five ESPN broadcasts (11/12 at Washington, 12/5 vs. Toronto, 3/6 vs. Denver, 3/25 at Phoenix and 4/8 at Dallas).

Prior to the regular season the Jazz will have seven preseason contests (two home, five road) beginning in Anaheim against the L.A. Lakers on October 7. The Jazz also travel to Illinois for two games against the Bulls which take place in Champaign and Chicago. The first preseason home game is on October 9 against the Phoenix Suns and the Jazz close the preseason at home against Portland on October 23.

A limited number of 2008-09 season ticket packages are currently available for purchase. Mini-packages will be available for purchase beginning on Wednesday August 13. The Cougars are 3 days into to their fall camp, and things are still upbeat. Especially on a day when there was cloud cover and cooler tempatures.

BYU put on the shoulder pads today, but will not go "full pads" until Thursday with a scrimmage on Saturday.

Jay Drew joined the show and said that the big concerns at practice is the Vakapuna injury and the sloppiness of practice on Monday. Bronco criticized Vakapuna for his lack of dedication to the rehab of that hamstring and the team did a lot of pop-ups on Monday because they didn’t have their team coins. Sheldon asked if the Austin Collie injury is being undersold by the coaching staff and Drew said that BYU is presenting the best case scenario and that stress fractures are hard to predict.

Utes Open Camp With High Expectations.

With their first practice of the fall under their belts, the Utes are excited and have high expectation for this season. As is the norm for the Utes, the first goal is to win the conference championship. That was a goal that the Utes saw slip through their fingers early last year after losing to Air Force in week two and UNLV in week four.

This year though the Utes feel as it they are more prepared as camp starts. For the second straight year Kyle Whittingham has cancelled the annual camp opening conditioning drills. Whittingham gave credit to the team for showing up and doing the work in the weight room over the summer.

So with the work over the summer, and with the experience returning on offense Kyle Whittingham was able to deem today's opening practice much better than last years first day saying the team hit the ground running.

NCAA regulations allow you 105 spots in camp and the Utes currently have 104 filled and are holding the final spot of JC transfer Aiona Key. Key has yet to join the team as he has had to complete some academic requirements, which he has. Whittingham said that Key could join the team as soon as Wednesday. They are waiting for the paperwork to be completed prior to joining the team.

Position Battles -

Darrell Mack and Matt Asiata are expected to battle with one another. Coach Whittingham said that right now they are 1 and 1a, saying he is excited to see them push each other.

Corbin Louks is listed as the backup QB, but Kyle Whittingham said Chad Manis would be given the oppurtunity to compete for the spot.

Aiona Key and David Reed (the 2 JC transfers) are expected to battle for the 4 WR spot.

(On if he feels himself pressing at this point) – “No. I would just say you’re trying to maximize every play. When you’re in a quarterback competition like this, you don’t want to go out there and force a ball. You don’t want to go out there and not take advantage of a play. So you’re really trying to be perfect. Some people may say, ‘Oh, that’s pressing.’ But I say that’s the game. That’s what the game is like. When you’re trying to win a football game you have to be smart with the ball, you have to take advantage of a play when it’s there because some teams, they may only give you one shot for a home run, but you have to be able to find it and take it. So I would say having it like this makes it more game-like, where especially in the playoffs or being a playoff contender, this is when it comes down to each and every play.”

(On if he is watching the other quarterbacks and trying to top them when he has his shot) – “No. Most of the time, you’re just watching. You kind of replay the play in your head and say, ‘What would I do? What am I looking for?’ We’re all coached on the same thing. It’s not like I’m given one word of advice and Josh (McCown) is give another. We’re all coached on the exact same thing. So when one of the other guys are in, I’m watching and saying, ‘What would I do in this situation?’ I’m trying to get myself better, even when I’m not in.”

(On not throwing any touchdown passes in today’s scrimmage) – “There were a couple of ones that were close. There was one in the corner of the end zone where I thought the defender had his back to me and didn’t put enough height on it and he turned around and got a hand up on it. Maybe looking back on it, I need to get eight more inches and it might have dropped over him for a touchdown. That’s one of the big things. When you get that close, you’ve got to able to take advantage of the opportunities. I had a few plays down there where we had some pass plays kind of close. I want to be able to go back and make sure my decisions were correct. On that one, get it up about eight inches and it probably could have been good, and just try to find out whatever ways that I could to improve on it. Sometimes we do have reads, and sometimes that read may take you somewhere and everybody might be covered and you might have to run.”

(On the offense trying to close the gap with the defense starting next week) – “I think we’ll start making big strides because this offseason we were installing a whole new offense, going through whole new reads. Then what happens is once you start to get basic plays in, then you start to change the formations a little bit. Once you change the formations, then the personnel changes. So you’re getting used to different guys and different reads. We may have a play that we may install, and then you may never rep it and then all of a sudden four days later now you’re repping it for the first time. A lot of it is just a learning experience. We’re going to able to sit down and watch this 90-play scrimmage. That’s a lot of tape that that you can learn from. Once we learn from that, I think we’ll start to make real big strides.”

BYU: Collie Has Stress Fracture

The biggest news to come out of BYU's first practice Saturday is that a stress fracture in his leg will limit receiver Austin Collie throughout fall camp.

The junior, who is BYU's best receiver, insists he will be ready for the season opener Aug. 30 against Northern Iowa. He spent a portion of the first practice going over coverages with freshman receiver O'Neill Chambers.

“It’s been nagging me for about two and a half weeks,” said Collie. “I was told to just stay off it and try to maintain it so once I’m healthy and ready I can come in and take off from where I left off. It’s really not that serious, just a minor setback. We just want to make sure it doesn’t linger on throughout the year.”

Coach Bronco Mendenhall singled out reserve quarterback Brendan Gaskins, who completed 6 of 9 passes for 49 yards during non-contact scrimmage drills. Gaskins is competing for the No. 2 position behind starter Max Hall.

“Brendan Gaskins was impressive today,” said Mendenhall. “Not only on the field, but also in our conditioning test this morning. I was probably more impressed with him than any other player just based on today’s practice. It isn’t a solidification of position, but he did great today.”
Said Hall: “There are still some kinks we’ve got to work out, some fundamental stuff, but that just comes with the beginning of camp. I thought it was a great first day. [The offense] picked up right where it left off at the end of spring ball. It’s comforting as the quarterback to know you’ve got guys around you who are experienced at what they’re doing.”
Before practice, the team went through a morning conditioning test up Y Mountain, east of the university. The path covers 1.2 miles and rises 1,000 feet.

"I appreciate your effort," Mendenhall told the team as they overlooked Utah Valley. "I am most impressed by how you finished. It's representative of who you are. We've had strong finishes over the past three season, and that's not surprising because of who you are. Now the question is what kind of start do you want to have?"

Mendenhall talked about the team's 1-3 start in 2005, the 1-2 start in 2006 and the 1-2 start in 2007. The last two seasons ended with consecutive 10-game winning streaks.

"There's something about starting and finishing with the same effort," he said. "What kind of start do you want. Only you'll know if you have given your personal best. I trust you. I trust this team."

Other notes include:

- As expected,receiver Atem Bol and running back Seta Pohahau are not on the team. . Mendenhall said Bol is planning to attend Snow College while Pohahau will look to enroll at BYU in January. Mendenhall also said junior college transfer Bernard Afuiti will not be able to practice until the necessary academic paperwork has been received from his junior college.

- Linebacker Grant Nelson is expected to miss the season after battling an illness that will require surgery. In addition, fellow linebacker Matt Bauman is expected to be slowed during the first few days of camp while recovering bruised foot he sustained as a result of a scooter accident. Bauman will be re-evaluated next week.

- Tight end recruit Austin Holt will be leaving this month for a two-year mission in St. Louis. Receiver Jake Murphy has received his mission call to Sydney, Australia. Murphy, the son of Atlanta Braves All-Star Dale Murphy, will report to the MIssionary Training Center in December.

Locke -- Anaylsis of BYU and Utah's Defensive Play

I just broke down the last three years of the Utes and Cougars defensive performances. I compared how each team did holding opponents compared to their season average points per game. In addition, how did the Utes and the Cougars perform based on the rank of the offensive team.

CONCLUSION -- THE COUGARS DEFENSIVE SUCCESS IS BASED UPON PLAYING INFERIOR OPPONENTS. WHENEVER THEY PLAY A HIGH POWER OFFENSE THEY STRUGGLE BADLY. WHEREAS THE UTES PLAY DOWN TO THEIR OPPONENTS BUT SHOW EVERY SIGN THAT THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY DEFENSE AGAINST ANY OFFENSIVE GROUP IN THE COUNTRY.

OTHER FINDINGS

1) Overall these two defensive teams have performed in very similar fashion. Both teams have held opponents to 4 points below their season average.

2) The Utes defense performs better against the best offensive teams. The Utes defense has held the 6 top 30 offenses they have played over the last three years to a touchdown below their season average.

3) In contrast, when BYU plays a team with a high powered offense (someone in the top 30) they allow a touchdown more per game. Actually 8 points.

4) BYU makes its hay against the lesser ran teams of the NCAA. In their 20 games (of their last 33 or 61%) against teams in the bottom 60 of college football offenses the Cougars dominate

5) The Utes play down to their opponents. They play great against good offenses they only hold the 21 games ( of last 34 or 62%) to 3.7 points below their average.

6) The Utes have played just 7 of 34 games against top 40 offenses and BYU has played 9 of 33.
